Grief Literacy – Start With Yourself

In this Vol. 20, Issue 2, February 2023 release of Vashon-Maury Island’s independent newspaper, The Vashon Loop, we’re excited to say another Grief+Creativity column from our co-founder, Kara Jones, is available. This issue’s column is titled, “Grief Literacy – Start With Yourself” and is available in print on the island, but also international and archive access is available via The Loop’s companion blog online.

The column is exploring how grief illiteracy contributes to the ways we are surprised by grief and not sure how to access existing support services when losses happen. Jones posits creative approaches to begin to raise your own grief literacy, including links to various organizations, groups, games, and more. By raising our own grief literacy, and inviting friends and family along with us, we hope we can begin to change the culture of grief. While grief is an individual experience, we are always embedded in our kinship systems with our experiences, so what steps can we take to raise literacy for ourselves and these kinship systems?

The artwork featured with the article is shared in larger format here as well. Jones offered, “I’m so excited to see this heARTwork reaching different audiences since it was created several years ago as an invitation for people to start their hero’s journey exactly with whatever step is right in front of them, hence, the “Start here,” in the image. I’ve wanted to find ways to continue to extend that invitation to people having grief experiences, and the inclusion in The Loop is one way I’m thrilled to do that.”

There will be an additional three articles in 2023 in this column, and we’re looking forward to sharing them with you here as each is published! ❤️
